CHAPTER TWENTY

Being suspended from work didn’t stop me from working, and I managed to secure the two musical acts for the gala by Thursday night before Linda’s deadlines. So maybe I hadn’t ‘auditioned’ them as I had first wanted to, but I was still confident in my choices. The sweet Welsh pop musician I’d landed was originally from a sheep farm, so no issues there, and considering Jeremy managed Mad Lurchers meant they were good enough for me.

After accomplishing the last thing on my list, I began to feel much better about myself. Plus, working from home also meant spending much more time with Ruben than I would have if I were working my regular hours. Ramesh had contacted me this morning when he’d heard the news and was happily surprised when I produced the names of the two acts to him.

“Girl, sometimes Linda’s moodiness gets in the way of her seeing a good thing when we’ve got it. And you, my darling, have got it. You may be an emotional ball of mess, but damn, can you work your ass off and get great results. Well done.”

I was buoyed by Ramesh’s somewhat backhanded compliment and hoped he would put a good word in for me.

Now it was time to get ready for Augustus’ party night. I felt as though I deserved to let loose tonight. Ruben and I were both nervous, and anticipation hung in the room.

“Are you cool, Rubie?” I asked as I pushed my boobs around in my bra.

“Yeah,” he mumbled.

“Why don’t you sound convincing?”

“Probably because I’m nervous as fuck. What goes on at these parties? I mean, I know what happens, but I’m no sex god. What if I don’t fit in or something?”

I moved across to him and helped him straighten his tie. “Firstly, you are a sex god. Secondly, you will totally fit in. You’re Ruben Ainsley, my sexy boyfriend who, if you’ve never noticed, loses his inhibitions pretty damn quickly once he’s hard. We’ll both be fine. Let’s promise to stick together, deal?”

“Deal.” He tugged me to him and kissed me. When he pulled back, he eyed my black lace bra, matching panties, and black, thigh-high stockings. “Are you going like this, or are you putting something else on?”

I slapped him playfully. “Please. As if I want to freeze to death and give the paps more ammo against me while doing so.” I proceeded to pull on a black coat and paraded around for Ruben. He let out a low whistle as he watched me. “Ready?”

Ruben wrinkled his nose. “Do you think I should lose the tie?”

“Definite no. It could be useful.”

Ruben chuckled. “All right. Off we go, then.”

We met Jeremy and Riva in the hallway. Jeremy looked quite dapper in a blue suit with an open-necked white collared shirt, while Riva cut a beautiful figure in a classic 1920s sequined fringe dress and matching makeup.

She suspiciously looked at me in my oversized coat. “Do I get a peek at your outfit then, darling?”

With a cheeky grin, I opened my coat, and she wolf-whistled.
